I'm a freelance artist and yarnbombing is one of the media I use to engage people in participatory arts....so often I will get paid (unless I choose not to be!).  I also work to commission and this includes yarnbombs.  I would love to know the following:

Do you get paid for your yarnbombs?

Do you think you should or are you happy beavering away with your needles and crochet hook just for the pleasure it gives others?

Is yarnbombing your art form, your craft, your hobby or your career?

I would love to know how you approach your yarnbombing - whether you see it as 'work' or whether you fit it in around other 'work' for pleasure

And how did you get started?   Who inspired you and why do you do it?

Thank you very much for participating in my research.

I intend to add a commentary to a film of my yarnbombing and may include your comments.   If you don't wish to be included please make it known and they will be kept confidential.

I do not get paid for yarnbombs. But I have been given yarn specifically for the purpose of yarn bombing.

I think it would be awesome if someone commissioned me to do a yarn bomb and was willing to pay me or at least buy the yarn, but I am happy for the pleasure that it gives people and myself.

Yarnbombing is my art form, my craft, my hobby and hopefully someday my career.

Right now, yarn related craft is pretty much all I do with my time. If I had a society based job, I am sure I would try and get as much crochet in and accommodate my need for yarn bombing.

I read the book Yarn Bombing: The art of knit graffiti and was completely entranced. I got a hook and yarn the next day and learned how to crochet with a youtube video. Shortly there after I was yarn bombing. I am inspired by almost every yarn bomb I see. I love the small little tags to the huge multi people group projects.

I hope this is what you were looking for! Yarn bombing is totally art and I love it so.

that's brilliant!  thanks for participating in my research project and I hope you get that commission one day soon, you certainly deserve one x

Do you get paid for your yarnbombs?

No, well not yet. I think it would mainly depend on what the commissioning was for, if it was for corporate purposes then sure payment would be nice however I am more them happy just to have expenses and materials covered

Do you think you should or are you happy beavering away with your needles and crochet hook just for the pleasure it gives others?

I think it is safe to say that all of us love the reactions we get from public that see our work. Not only that but many bits of public art will get forgotten about by the people that walk past them every day so adding something bright and a little different will draw attention back to the art. However like i said about if it was going to be used to help others profit then why not ask for a little in return.

Is yarnbombing your art form, your craft, your hobby or your career?

Dream would be all 4, I think of it as a art when thinking up the ideas and designs, I craft to create the art & treat it as a hobby to do in my time away from the stress and deadlines of work. Career? well if knitted trees suddenly becomes the next footballers must have accessory then I'm not going to say no!

I would love to know how you approach your yarnbombing - whether you see it as 'work' or whether you fit it in around other 'work' for pleasure

This is my release from work, My full time job is with some of the latest technology on the market and being able to put all that to one side and using these hands to create something using methods that out date everything else I do is a amazing feeling.

And how did you get started?   Who inspired you and why do you do it?

I started taking photos for the Knitting Ne'er Do Wells on one of there night time raids then working in the Town Centre i got to see peoples reactions and smiles when they sore it, that was enough for me and I have not looked back. Inspired by everyone & everything I see.

thanks mr stitch....valuable words x

Do you get paid for your yarnbombs?

* Nope! All my yarnbombs are free!

Do you think you should or are you happy beavering away with your needles and crochet hook just for the pleasure it gives others?

* At present I'm happy knitting for the fun of it! It's something I enjoy and it makes me happy seeing people react to my work.

Is yarnbombing your art form, your craft, your hobby or your career?

* To me, it is an art form and a hobby. Sometimes, I knit for the sheer fun and see what  I randomly come up with! Bows, hearts, strips and other simple things get created when I'm short on time or when I want to try new wool or techniques. This is the hobby part. Alternatively, I see it as an Art Form when I come up with a project and think it through to completion i.e. pre-planning times, sizes and loctations. This tends to be for bigger pieces or to create stories through yarnbombing opposed to random pieces for fun.

I would love to know how you approach your yarnbombing - whether you see it as 'work' or whether you fit it in around other 'work' for pleasure

* To me it is a bit of both. Sometimes I really want to knit and create something. Sometimes I create pieces that I've thought about and really want to do, such as promoting a favourite singer's new album, making a statement with colour or seasonal projects like The Yarnvent Calendar.

On the other hand, some things are on a tight deadline, like Mother's Day, Easter, Halloween etc. Sometimes you struggle to fit your ideas around your personal life and it all becomes a bit of a balancing act! That being said, I do it beacause I love it and sometimes, sitting up until 3am on Halloween night stitching eyes onto pumpkins and legs on to spiders to ensure that your project is complete for the event is rather exciting! It's kind of like leaving preperation for a big test to the last minute, cramming it in at the end and hoping for the best. On the most part, the results are fantastic and the pressure pushes you on to create a great yarnbomb! You normally exceed yourself!

And how did you get started?   Who inspired you and why do you do it?

*I got started when I saw someone else's yarnbombs and thought- WOW! That is so cool! I'm naturally a very creative person and have tried many crafts over the years. Sometime I lose interest, other times you can't practise enought so never really succeed or improve.

Yarnbombing to me is very inspiring because it's easy, fun, colourful and anyone can do it! I also love the mystery surrounding your secret persona that you create and the joy and intrigue it creates for the people who find and follow your work. Plus, it brightens up our ordinary lifes with a splash of colour and a dash of magic!

Hope this was helpful to you!
